Smith and Claudia Eller, along with the company of Michael Barker, Jacqueline Coley, Kirstin Benson, and Anita Gou shared their experiences and thoughts on women’s representation in cinema through a series of conversations, as per the Kering website. The event was graced by more than 300 guests from the film industry along with media. This edition of talks opened with the Lebanese director Nadine Labaki. She threw some light on the vital role played by the artist in influencing people through the process in a positive way and changing their mindsets for better. She also shared her own personal experience. Labaki stated, “When you live in a place with chaos, and politics is not leading anywhere, we need an alternative way of thinking. I think art is really the only way now. And I truly believe in our duty as artists, as filmmakers, to believe through our art that we change the world.”Quoting examples of feminist movements, the director happily brought forth the small changes that have taken place with respect to women’s representation in the movie industry. “I can see a lot happening after the #MeToo and the #TimesUp movement. I can see a change in people’s minds. I can see the change in the fact that the debate is out there, the discussion is out there. I think the way to start the healing process in any problem is by starting to talk about it, and this is what is happening.”Eva Longoria present in the panel also shared her views and personal experience in Hollywood being a director, producer and an actress. She laid stress on the need to have women critic as currently, most film critics are men. She stated, “When a movie comes out by a woman and a male critic says ‘I don’t get it’ - that tanks the movie. So, we must change the balance of women critics. You need to be in a leadership position to demand that balance.”The Co-Editor-in-Chief of Variety, Claudia Eller, later held a roundtable discussion on the subject. Those present in the discussion included Stacy L. Smith, a researcher, and professor at USC Annenberg, Michael Barker, co-president and co-founder of Sony Pictures Classics, Kirstin Benson from Getty Images, Jacqueline Coley, a critic with Rotten Tomatoes, and Anita Gou, a producer.Amid all this, The Women In Motion Award was given to Gong Li, a Chinese actress, and the Young Talent Award was won by German director Eva Trobisch. An official dinner was also hosted by Kering and the Festival de Cannes.Click on the slideshow for a sneak peek at the event https://www.blouinartinfo.com/ Founder: Louise Blouin Read more
