Homage was paid to legendary fashion designer Karl Lagerfeld, who left us last February. The special event, titled “Karl For Ever” was devised by Robert Carsen at the Grand Palais. Born in Toronto, Robert Carsen is a Canadian opera director, who is also the son of Walter Carsen, philanthropist. The event was attended by more than 2,000 guests who took turns celebrating the aesthete, man of culture, photographer and designer. The spectacular memorial displayed during the function spoke volumes about the immense talent of a fashion visionary, as per LVMH.Though it appeared to be a runway show but “Karl For Ever” was not one. It was a celebration of the many talents of an exceptional man, who was associated with Maison Fendi for 54 years. Video clips tracing the journey of the couturier’s life were laced with testimonials from personalities who worked closely with him or were friends with him. There were also performances by actors, musicians and dancers whose art he admired, presenting pieces that he loved.Tilda Swinton, Cara Delevingne, Fanny Ardant and Helen Mirren read excerpts from written works by Emily Dickinson, Virginia Woolf, Edith Sitwell and Colette, who were Lagerfeld’s favorite writers. The excerpts included some inspiring quotes as well as brilliant prefaces that inspired Lagerfeld.“The performances included dancer Lil Buck; violinist Charlie Siem (who played Paganini, a favorite composer of Karl Lagerfeld’s mother Elizabeth, who played the violin); Argentine choreographer German Cornejo, accompanied by his troupe of 17 tango dancers and seven musicians from Buenos Aires (Carlos Gardel was Karl’s favorite singer and the tango his favorite dance). Chinese pianist Lang Lang and singer-songwriter Pharrell Williams took the stage to pay tribute through their art to an exceptional figure who many of the talents present considered a dear friend, and someone who was a great inspiration to them,” says LVMH.The artists and the guests who graced the occasion with their presence at the Grand Palais to pay tribute to the legend were engaged in a fabulous exhibition of 56 life-size portraits of the designer, captured throughout his life. The exhibition included a few of the world’s most admired photographers. Even the backdrop chosen for the celebration reflected Lagerfeld’s favourites — black-and-white color having a touch of red. The decor was as per the legend’s taste.Click on the slideshow for a sneak peek at the special event. https://www.blouinartinfo.com/ Founder: Louise Blouin Read more
