The Palais Galliera, Paris, is currently showing “Back side / Fashion from Behind,” on view through November 17, 2019. It is an off-site exhibition at the Musee Bourdelle, which focuses on clothing seen from behind. One of the most common fashion trends these days is the backless dress. Admiring people from their back gives a different dimension to fashion aesthetics. “There is a social and psychological relationship between a person’s body and fashion. The exhibition challenges the perception we have of our own and other people’s backs,” states the gallery’s press release. “The back in a way is also a reminder of our limitations. It may or may not be hidden from view but is certainly concealed from touch. Yet, fashion keeps on highlighting and decorating it by covering or revealing it. This is the flattest part of every type of body, slender, or voluptuous. Messages, designs, and patterns displayed on the back attract glances,” the release adds. As per the release, this exhibition presents over 100 items from the 18th- century up to the present day along with a selection of film extracts and photographs. The exhibition extends across the Great Hall of Plasters, the contemporary Portzamparc extension, and Antoine Bourdelle’s studio. The models exhibited establish a discourse between fashion and sculpture, a conversation with the works of the great master of the turn of the 20th- century. “The exhibition takes a different look at the works of Bourdelle: we perceive with new eyes at the powerful, muscular backs and the slender outlines of his sculptures,” the release informs. Earlier, the exhibition’s first version was shown at the Musee Mode & Dentelle (Lace & Fashion Museum) in Brussels, in late 2018 and early 2019.Click on the slideshow for a sneak peek at the exhibition. https://www.blouinartinfo.com/ Founder: Louise Blouin Read more
